Maria Island is a special place to ride a bike. It is an isolated and largely pristine environment, there is minimal traffic (you probably won’t see a moving vehicle) and there is an abundance of wildlife.
Our riding rules are in place so that you, other visitors today and future visitors enjoy the experience of Maria Island. There aren’t many but they are important.
Maria Island is a National Park - this means there are rules about what we need to do to look after it for generations to come. The island is managed by the Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service — they have a great Maria Island visitor hub on their website.

When you collect your bike the attendant will help ensure you are able to ride safely and are familiar with the operation of the bike and conditions on the island.
Be aware that wildlife can cut across trails at any point.
Maria Island is a remote location. This will impact on the timing of medical attention if it is required.
Be respectful of other riders and walkers. – please keep to the left side of trails and reduce speed near walkers
Please keep to formed and designated tracks – this ensures you are on the safest riding surface and protects wildlife habitat
-
Riding bikes on the beaches damages critical shore bird habitat and disturbs nesting birds. As well it damages the bikes. It is not permitted and you can be fined. Please do not ride on the beaches.
-
The bike collection and drop off point is located opposite the Ranger station on the southern side of the Darlington historic site.

If you need to drop off your bike and the store is not manned please place the bike in the outside racks, lock the wheel on to the stand (an open lock will be beside the stand) and clip your helmet to the handlebars.
